Summary: The hydraulic retention time in the reactor was calculated to be 22,9 hours and the sludge was removed from the digestors every 14 days. The reactor was monitored regularly over a period of 25 weeks from March through August with ambient temperatures ranging from 12 to 38 C. This technology is promissing however more research has to be done to verify the behavior of the reactor during winter conditions. Verifications have also to be made for very cold temperature that can be observed in many areas in Canada.
Abstract: An aerobic treatment system consisting of 3 sequencing batch reactors was installed on a pig farm. The reactors were operated at ambient temp. and run in series. A cycle of 4 h with a react period of 3.3 h was adopted. One thousand four hundred litres of swine waste water were treated and discharged each cycle. A mean cell residence time of 14d was maintained after the 15th wk and the reactors were monitored regularly for 7 months. The results indicated that very high biochemical oxygen demand removal (>91%) was achieved. In general, effluent biochemical oxygen demand concentrations were below 50 mg/litre. No nitrification occurred in the beginning of the experiment, although nitrification was observed in the second part of the monitoring period. The sequencing batch reactor system proved to be an effective treatment method for dilute swine waste water.
