Fiona was raised in a small town on the west coast of Scotland. Not knowing what career she wanted to do, other than working with animals, she graduated from Glasgow University in 2003 with a degree in Zoology, which was followed by a M.Sc. in Applied Animal Behaviour and Animal Welfare from The University of Edinburgh. It was during the M.Sc. programme that she became more familiar of the study of animal behaviour in farm animals and found her ideal career. After working as a research technician for 1 year she went on to complete a Ph.D. in dairy cow feeding behaviour from The University of Edinburgh and the Scottish Agricultural College. Fiona is particularly interested in how we can optimise the housing design of farm animals to improve animal welfare and recently took up her post as a Research Associate at Prairie Swine Centre in October 2009. Despite previously working mostly with cattle and sheep, she is looking forward to the challenges of working with sows, and improving sow housing. She is also excited about her move to Canada and hopes that the winter doesn’t get too cold!
