LeAnn Johnston was raised on a grain and livestock farm in south eastern Kansas in the United States. She received a B.Sc. in Animal Science and Industries from Kansas State University and then returned to production agriculture for a number of years; first raising row crops and cattle then working in the breeding and gestation and farrowing departments of a 1,200 sow swine facility.
Since then she has received a M.Sc. degree from KSU where she looked at the effects of feed processing on feed digestibility and growth performance in all phases of swine production. Her Ph.D. and post-doctoral research was conducted at Louisiana State University focusing on the effects of phytase on amino acid and energy availability in swine and poultry. During the last ten years she has worked at feed companies in the Midwestern U.S. as a Swine Nutritionist. She will conduct nutrition and contract research for the Prairie Swine Centre.
