Lyman Moreno is a graduate student in the Engineering Research group at the Prairie Swine Centre. He is currently doing his research on the use of a biological treatment approach in controlling hydrogen sulphide emissions from swine manure. Lyman came from a rural area in the Philippines and moved to Saskatoon in 2007 to pursue a M.Sc. degree in Environmental Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan under the supervision of Dr. Bernardo Predicala and Dr. Mehdi Nemati. He earned his BSc. in Agricultural Engineering from the Visayas State University in the Philippines in 2005. He took the Philippine Licensure Exam for Agricultural Engineering in the same year and placed top sixth.
Lyman had his first experience in raising pigs when his father built a backyard piggery of about 6 finishers and 1 sow when he was ten. There he learned feeding the pigs regularly, patiently cleaning their stalls, and disposing their manure. Lyman has always been fascinated with how science and engineering work. Growing up, he gained interest in research work and started conducting research projects when he was in high school. He participated and won several regional and national science fair competitions in the Philippines. Before joining the centre, he worked as a Researcher at the International Rice Research Institute in Los Banos, Philippines.
